Cheap Multi Fuel Stoves
Summary: 349338.xyz These basic and light-weight stoves use wood, hexamine tablets, gas canisters, and white fuel with a single nozzle. They're popular in colder temperatures, but they're noisy and don't have a simmer limit.
Certain multi-fuel stoves can burn different types of liquid fuel. The MSR WhisperLite Universal, for instance, takes both white and isobutane canisters of fuel.
Optimus Nova
The Optimus Nova is a multi-fuel stove that can be used with a variety of liquid fuels. It has a quick-priming burner and an aluminum pump that self-purges, and a precise control of the simmer. Its low centre of gravity and wide spreading legs make it a solid stove that can be used on uneven ground. This makes it a great stove for group base camps kayaking, Arctic camp.
The Optimus Nova is different from other liquid fuel stoves that are plagued by unburned fuel remaining in the fuel line or the nozzle. This can be solved by simply flipping over the bottle. The intake hoses are then removed from the fuel and forces them to take in air, which puts out flames and depressurizes bottles.
This seems like an clever solution to a long-standing problem and it definitely works. The Nova can be used with any standard fuel bottle with an o-ring seal, including MSR bottles. It also comes with a full-featured stove bag that includes separate pockets for tools, spare parts and lubricant, as well as the fuel pump.
This is an excellent all-round stove for backpacking use in the UK especially for long-distance trips where a wide choice of fuels is essential. The price is affordable compared to other canister stoves with similar capabilities. The Optimus Nova is also easy to maintain and fun to use.
Kovea Hydra
The Kovea Hydra multi fuel stove was first marketed in 2010 and has been a favorite choice for backpackers since. A few UK backpackers seem to give it much attention nowadays maybe because they've gotten been able to catch up with more well-known brands or whatever the latest lightweight offering out of China or Korea is but it doesn't mean the Hydra doesn't still have its merits.
It is a small and light stove that can burn all liquid fuels including propane butane, white gas and white gas using a single nozzle. It has a fairly typical stove design, with the burner bell that is bolted to a body that anchors three support legs that fold out. The pump is just above the fuel line, the generator loop wraps around the inlet and the flame spreader is situated just above. The burner is a slow-moving flame type. This means that it is not susceptible to wind.
It's a remarkably versatile cooker as it can be used with either propane canisters or isobutane canisters. It is simple to simmer with isobutane and propane and burns all fuels at a reasonable rate. However when using white gas the stove is a little slower.
One thing to be aware of when using the Hydra is that the instructions are written in English which was not written by someone who speaks the language. The instructions caution against the use of certain types of lighter fluids that if used in a manner that is not what is actually intended can lead to an accident that could result in Kovea in a lot of legal hot water. But that, any 7/16ths UNEF threaded gas canister from a reputable manufacturer will work fine.
Primus OmniLite Ti
Primus Omnilite Ti can be an ideal choice for those who are seeking a multifuel cooker that cooks using a variety of fuels. It can be used with petrol/gasoline, gas, Www.349338.Xyz or diesel, kerosene, and aviation fuel. It has separate controls for every fuel type and also alter the size of the flame. The stove also has a fuel line that lies flat on the ground and is easily connected to the tank.
While the Primus Omnilite is a fantastic stove, it requires maintenance to keep it working correctly. Particularly, it has a tendency to flare when priming which can be dangerous. This is a problem that occurs with all stoves with liquid fuel, which use a secondary spindle on the stove end instead of an actual coil to vaporize the fuel.
Another issue is the fact that it requires different jets for every type of fuel. This means that if cooking on kerosene the jet hole has to be smaller than when cooking on gas. It's a minor issue however it's something to be aware of.
MSR Whisper Lite
The MSR Whisper Lite is one of the tiniest, lightest and most affordable multi-fuel stoves. It is also very easy to repair in the field. It can be used with either canister fuel or liquid gas and includes attachments for both. The new model is lighter by 10% than its predecessor and the burner has been revamped for improved heat distribution. This is a great option for backpackers with a limited budget or those who are just beginning.
The whistler Lite requires a bit of time to prepare, prime and boil water, but it is a reliable stove that will never let you down. The flame is extremely powerful when cranked to the max and can easily boil a liter of water in less than two minutes. The only drawback is that it doesn't simmer like other stoves.
This is the reason MSR has developed the Dragonfly stove to be a pot that can be used as a simmering stove. It has a similar design to the whistler, but is more compact and offers more performance. However it's not as affordable as the whistler Lite. The Soto Amicus cookset and stove is a great alternative, offering the same setup at less than half the cost. Whisperlite International and Universal can be utilized with isobutane. Both versions have the same basic design, however the Universal version is also compatible with canister fuel.
Coleman Sportster II
Like many Coleman stoves, this is a basic, rough and ready unit that just gets the job done. It's compact, self-contained and solid with the tank on the bottom and the burner on the top. This makes it simple to operate and a great option for backpackers, beginners looking to save weight and for those of us who have spares in the van.
This stove is designed to burn Coleman's proprietary fuel (naptha also known as “white gas”) but can be used with unleaded gas too. A gallon of gasoline can last for as longer as a standard Coleman liquid fuel cylinder so you'll save money on fuel using this option.
Liquid fuel stoves have a steep learning curve, as you'll have to pressurize and prime them before you can get a nice blue flame going. If you do it wrong your fuel may be sprayed, pool, or splash over the burner or sputter. To get the hang of this, practice outside before embarking on your excursion.
The stove may lose some performance and flame odor effectiveness if you use non-Coleman fuels, but this is a tradeoff in its versatility. Make sure you purchase unleaded gas and not something that's enhanced with alcohol or 349338 methanol. This is because these kinds of fuel can cause the unit to be sputtering, leaky, 349338.Xyz and may even explode!
ATG Jiko
The ATG Jiko multi-fuel stove from South Africa (formerly known as the Jiko) is a lightweight multifuel stove specifically designed for harsh conditions such as Africa. It's a compact and reliable all-in-one stove that burns solid fuel, alcohol, tabs, and also gels using a single nozzle. It's a light and minimalist design that costs less than most other multifuel stoves and also offers low costs of ownership, with fuel being less expensive per Liter than gas canisters.
Other multifuel stoves have a separate nozzle for every type of fuel. This makes them a little fiddly to change over in the rain or without gloves and can add to their weight overall. Multifuel stoves that are of the current type use a single nozzle to burn multiple fuels, which makes it simpler. The newer models of these stoves are referred to as 'hybrid', or Www.349338.Xyz 'compressed fuel multifuel stoves' and there are a variety of names for them, including isobutane canister fuel white gas, kerosene and unleaded car petrol/gasoline.
Another option is to buy a multifuel stove that converts your regular Trangia burner into a multifuel cooker. These are available in camping stores that specialize in outdoor equipment and are available internationally. They're a great choice for Trangia fans and they're capable of burning all liquid fuels with the exception of diesel. If used with the correct accessories can even cook.
