The only restriction is that your BMW must be equipped with Comfort Access installed at the factory or retrofitted by a BMW authorized dealer. When you are ready to set up your brand new BMW Digital Key make sure your smartphone is charged and in the same space as your vehicle. Place your iPhone into the smartphone tray, then select 'Start pairing' from the BMW Connected App on your vehicle. Once your phone has been paired with the vehicle, you can remove the iPhone from the tray.

Once you're ready to add additional users, just log into your BMW Connected account and select 'Add New Digital Key'. You'll need to enter your contact details and the VIN of the car you'd like to add access to. You'll then receive a code to enter on your mobile device. Battery Replacement

If the batteries in your BMW fob run down, you may wonder, “Can I change the battery on the BMW key fob?”. The answer is dependent on the model you have. The older diamond-shaped BMW fobs, like are not designed to be used for battery replacement. They are glued to the backplate, so trying to pry off the backplate will likely cause some damage to the fob. However, the latest fobs can get their batteries replaced by simply opening the fob and replacing the CR2450 or CR2032 battery.

For the more popular smart key models (like those in the 1, 3, 5, 7, and X series) you can use a small tab to remove the valet key made of metal, then open up the access port by using a screwdriver or another thin tool. This should reveal a tiny groove. Use the tool to push in the small tab and then remove the valet key to reveal the CR2032 batteries inside. Replace the battery with a new one, and then put the cover back on.

You will need to use a different approach for a Display key with a touchscreen. The Display Key is water resistant but not waterproof like an ordinary fob. You must take care to avoid exposing to too much moisture. It can survive an excursion through the washing machine but it is recommended to treat it as it's a smartphone. Don't be concerned about rain as long as it's kept away from water.
